The Department of Industrial Economics and Strategy invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the following research area: Country capabilities and the international competitiveness of firms.
Why do some regions and countries obtain international leadership in certain industries? This question is at the heart of the important debate on the resource and capability endowments of nations and the international competitive advantage of firms and calls for further research. The Danish maritime industry – which includes shipping, shipbuilding and repair, maritime equipment manufacture, maritime services and offshore oil and gas extraction – offers a welcome opportunity to study this and related questions. Denmark is the leading European seafaring nation (and on world Top10) and Danish maritime companies are among the most innovative and successful in the world. The project will be embedded in a pioneering research unit at CBS called “Blue Denmark.dk – Research on the Maritime Industry” and the scholar will be in close contact with central maritime companies and organisations. The Danish Maritime Foundation funds the scholarship.

The department will give priority to applicants who demonstrate competencies within empirics and theory, and who show an interest in both joining the department’s research environment and functioning as a link to the relevant industry. An educational background in the social sciences, preferable business economics, is necessary. Relevant business experience may be useful.

General information:
To be awarded a scholarship, one must be enrolled as a PhD student. Enrolment is dependent on the acceptance of an application, including a short project description prepared in co-operation with the Department. The description of the research project should contain a presentation of the intended focus problems, including the theory and methodology expected to be used.
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years and is only awarded to applicants with a Master’s degree.
The scholarship stipulates that the holder carry out tasks equivalent to 840 work hours.
Salary and appointment as a PhD student will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.
In addition, all applicants must submit an application that includes a completed compulsory application form, copy of Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, brief curriculum vitae (CV), and a list of papers and publications.
A committee of experts in the field in question will consider all applications. Assessment of the applicants will be based on the quality and relevance of the project, including an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to accomplish it.
