The Universität Bern will offer international students Excellence Scholarships for postgraduate study for the academic year 2008/09. The scholarship consists of 1600 CHF per month for the entire duration of the Master’s programme (Theologische Fakultät, Rechtswissenschaftliche Fakultät, Wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät, Medizinische Fakultät, Vetsuisse Fakultät, Philosophisch-historische Fakultät, Philosophisch-humanwissenschaftliche Fakultät, Philosophisch-naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät, Konferenz gesamtuniversitärer Einheiten).

Criteria for selection:
* Applicants must, by end of July 2008, have graduated with at least a Bachelor’s degree in the same field of study as the selected Master’s programme
* The applicant’s place of residence during the application period must be in their home country
The applicant’s file must include the following in duplicate:
* Application form (download here)
* Curriculum vitae /resume
* Letter of motivation and objectives
* Letter of recommendation from a professor of your home university
* Evidence of sufficient language proficiency in German or dispensation granted by the faculty concerned at Universität Bern
* Transcript of grades obtained during Bachelor studies, diploma (photocopies) or confirmation of home university that Bachelor studies in the same study field as applied Master’s programme will be completed by the end of July 2008
* Record of school-leaving examination (i.e. university entrance qualification)
* 2 passport photos
* Copy of passport
The application must be written in the language of the corresponding Master’s course.

The files will be examined by a selection committee. The criteria for selection are previous academic excellence and the potential of the candidate.

IPRS are funded by the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). IPRS are open to citizens of all overseas countries (excluding New Zealand ). IPRES cover tuition fees only and are available for either Doctoral or Masters level research. Closing date: All applications for Swinburne research scholarships close on the last Friday of October each year.
Swinburne qualifications are highly regarded and research positions are prized by the academic community.
To qualify for candidature for higher degree by research, you must have completed at least four years (or equivalent) of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement. For example:
a four year degree (eg: engineering, information technology, education etc.);
a three year degree and an Honours year;
a three year degree and one year of a Masters by coursework;
a three year course and one year of a Masters preliminary or other qualifying program; or
a three year degree and a postgraduate diploma
Plus students must demonstrate English Language proficiency: IELTS (Academic Module) of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL 575 (paper-based) or 232 (computer-based) with TWE 5.0.
If you are already studying a Masters degree and wish to convert to a PhD, you will only be considered for a scholarship for a PhD program after advice from DEST.
